121 collections from all over the world have been submitted

The fashion show with the finalists will be on May 24th in Puerto Portals

Puerto Portals, Mallorca, March 15th 2019

Argentina, in the International category; Madrid, in the National category; and Mallorca, in the National Curvy are the absolute winners of the #mallorcadesignday 2019 by Prêt à Portals. The Argentinian designer, Nicolás Sánchez, is the winner in the International category with his Tokyo collection. Madrid’s David de Calle is the winner in the competition with his National category’s collection Pielofobia and the Majorcan Carla García Parrondo, with her Komorebi collection, is the new winner in the National Curvy category.

The jury has also selected 6 proposals by new designers from the Balearic Islands. They are: Rebeca Tejedor, with the collection Mujeres; Carla García Parrondo, with Fronteras; Marisa del Hoyo, with the collection Nanook; Alejandra Olalla Candia, with the collection Xie; Estela Martí, with the collection XXI; and Alfonso Sánchez, with Yana.

From now on, winners and finalists have 9 weeks to sew and to prepare their collections, which we will be able to see on the catwalk next May 24th in a big fashion show held in Puerto Portals.

The director of the event, Raquel Arañón and the CEO of Puerto Portals, Corinna Graf, have today announced the winners and finalists at a press conference held in Puerto Portals. The emblematic Mallorcan port makes, once again, a clear commitment to fashion and design, becoming the stage for this great event, which will bring together great designers, international models and, recognized experts, journalists and first level influencers in the world of fashion.

Graf has said that she is very proud that Puerto Portals is integrated into a such an important event for the fashion industry. She pointed out that “fashion is part of our navy. We do not only have nautical and commercial offer, but also good restaurants, also big stores. It is part of the essence of Puerto Portals to be open to everyone. And this is an event open to everyone with a desire to to do something in the world of fashion.”

The theme of inspiration for the second edition of the event was People & Places, which has allowed contestants to draw inspiration from anywhere on the planet and people that live in it.

The International winner gets a prize of 2,500 euros and a stay of 1 week for two people in Mallorca. For the National and National Curvy winners, the  prize is 2,000 euros and a 1 week stay for two people in Mallorca; and the Balearic winner also gets 2,000 euros and a stay on the Peninsula.

The jury of this second edition of #mallorcadesignday is formed by experts and professionals from the world of fashion, design and communication. They are: the designers Pablo Erroz and Ela Fildalgo; the designer and professor of the School of Design from Ibiza, Tolo Crespí; jewellery designer Isabel Guarch; costume designer theatrical, Valentín Zamora; the director of the Escola Superior de Disseny de les Illes Balears, María Abando; the head of communication at Coca Cola European Partners in the Balearic Islands, Gabriel Mulet; the fashion entrepreneur, Maite Arias; and the representative Management Keragres, Antonio Genestra.

A total of 121 collections from around the world have been submitted to this second edition of the #mallorcadesignday, quadrupling the number of proposals that were submitted to the previous edition of the competition, held in 2017. 

By category, the following proposals have been received:

1. International – 11 PROPOSALS (Argentina, Italy, Bulgaria, England and France)

2. National – 58 PROPOSALS (Pontevedra, Vigo, Oviedo, Santander, Pamplona, Zaragoza, Barcelona, Alicante, Valencia, Ciudad Real, Badajoz, Madrid, Bilbao, Huelva, Córdoba, Sevilla, Cádiz y Málaga)

3. National Curvy – 17 PROPOSALS (Madrid, Málaga, Argentina, Mallorca, Pamplona, Alicante, Pontevedra, Valencia, Ibiza y Badajoz)

4. Balearic – 35 PROPOSALS (Mallorca e Ibiza)

Fashion, style and design come together with photography with a new Steet Style competition open to everyone. A prize of 1,000 euros will be awarded to the photo showing the most stylish anonymous model. You can consult the competition rules at the website: www.mallorcadesignday.com

The fashion contest  #mallorcadesignday arises with the aim of promoting and making the work of new designers visible. The competition is aimed at people of any nationality who are studying or have completed studies in Fashion Design. It is also open to people linked to the world of design and/or tailoring and who do not have a university degree or a consolidated sales brand recognised in the world of fashion design.

The presentation was also attended by the managing director of the IDI, Nuria Hinojosa, who stressed that “fashion is a strategic sector for the economy of the islands. A sector that has a turnover of 572 million euros a year in the archipelago and employs 1,500 workers. There are 119 fashion companies based in the islands”.
